Imagine if our email inbox was your front door. Every few seconds someone knocks on your front door. You drop what you were doing, walk to the door, open it, see what’s on your doorstep, close the door, get back to where you were, then try and remember what you were in the middle of doing. 

How annoying would that be??

Email notifications, which are the default settings in every email provider, has the power to interrupt you when you’re doing something more important. 

So it’s time to turn off your email notifications, everywhere. I’m also going to show you how to turn off just SOME notifications so you can be notified of important emails when necessary.

Turn off notifications in Gmail Desktop

  1. In the top right, click Settings > See all settings > General (you’ll automatically start with the General Tab’
  2. Scroll down to the ‘Desktop notifications’.
  3. Select ‘Email notifications off’.
  4. At the bottom of the page, click Save changes.

Note: If you use inbox categories and have turned on notifications for new emails, you’ll only receive notifications about messages in your Primary category. 

Inbox Categories: Add or remove category tabs

  1. In the top right, click Settings > See all settings.
  2. Click the Inbox tab.
  3. In the ‘Inbox type’ section, select Default. Note: To hide all tabs, select another inbox type.
  4. In the ‘Categories’ section, tick the boxes of tabs that you want to see. Note: You can’t make new tabs; you can only display or hide existing ones.
  5. Scroll to the bottom, then click Save Changes.

If you’ve turned on notifications, you’ll only receive notifications about emails in your Primary category.

If you’ve turned on notifications for important emails, you’ll receive notifications for everything marked as important.

Turn off notifications in Gmail tablet/mobile

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app .
  2. In the top left, tap Menu Settings .
  3. Select your account.
  4. Tap Notifications None.

Note If you have multiple accounts in the Gmail app, you need to change this setting for each account.

Turn on alerts in Gmail tablet

Notifications are turned on for any messages in your Primary label by default.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app .
  2. In the top left, tap Menu Settings .
  3. Select your account.
  4. Tap Notifications.
  5. Select a notification level.

Get notified for important emails

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app .
  2. In the top left, tap Menu Settings .
  3. Select your account.
  4. Tap Notifications High priority only.

Turn off notifications in iOS Mail

  1. Tap ‘Settings’
  2. Tap ‘Notifications’
  3. Tap ‘Mail’
  4. Turn off all notifications

Turn off notifications in Outlook 365 desktop

  1. In the top left, click on the Settings 
  2. Change Desktop Notifications to off

Turn off notifications in Outlook 2010, 2013, and 2016 desktop

  1. Select File > Options > Mail.
  2. Under Message arrival, clear the Display a Desktop Alert checkbox and then select OK.

Turn off notifications in Outlook mobile

  1. Within the app, tap “Settings”. You can find that by opening up the left navigation menu and clicking the “gear” icon at the bottom.
  2. In Notifications under “Mail”, you can turn off and adjust push notifications for your Mail (All, Focused, or None), Calendar, and disable sounds for each.
